There is a version of the alibi that holds until it is tested. Scotland entered this tournament with preparation cited as the variable most likely to explain previous shortfalls. The infrastructure argument, the funding argument, the shielding-from-distraction argument: each belonged to a category of claim that could not be fully disproved without its opposite being tried.
Its opposite has now been tried.
A BBC Sport Scotland investigation establishes that the squad received provision at a level Scotland's World Cup preparations have not historically permitted. Accommodation, support infrastructure, conditions — the requests, by the available account, were met. The pitch record does not reflect this. Against Haiti, a 1-0 win that satisfied the requirement of three points without resolving the question of capacity. Against Morocco, a 1-0 defeat in which Ismael Saibari scored from a Brahim Díaz pass in approximately 71 seconds — the fastest goal of this tournament — and Morocco held roughly 78% possession in the first half. The comfort of the preparation environment and the discomfort of the performance gap now occupy the same paragraph in the record.
The precedent is not obscure. Scotland arrived in Argentina for the 1978 World Cup carried by investment, managerial confidence, and a stated readiness that the group stage did not confirm. The mechanism — provision outrunning result — is not new to this programme. What is new is that the argument has been made more cleanly, tested more thoroughly, and closed more completely than it was then.
This is what total provision does. It removes the last available deflection. When the logistical variable has been controlled for, when the requests have been answered, the gap that remains cannot be attributed to circumstance. It becomes structural in the most precise sense: it belongs to something inside the performance itself rather than anything arranged around it.
The question this raises is not one of blame. It is a question of diagnosis. If environment was the missing variable, the Morocco result reads differently than if environment was never the variable at all. The record currently supports neither reading conclusively — one result does not establish a pattern, and the Haiti win exists in the same sample — but the closing of the preparation defence means the question must now be carried into the Brazil fixture at Hard Rock Stadium on 24 June without the option of returning to logistics for cover.
Scotland have never progressed beyond the group stage in eight previous World Cup appearances. The provision, this time, was not the problem. That fact, now entered into the record, changes what the next result is permitted to mean.
